Dunkirk & WWII Museum Operation Dynamo

We have watched the movie Dunkirk this week. It was hard for Miles to watch. It wasn't bloody, just without much dialogue and so hard to follow for younger kids. Caden was pretty interested and this sparked questions and good conversations between us.  It also meant that Caden was excited about visiting Dunkirk and told me how excited he was several times throughout the morning. We were very lucky with the weather.

It was amazing to get there and imagine the French and English troops on the beach and the German dive bombers up ahead being chased by the British spitfires. We could see them all around us, the ghosts of the past.

I loved this.

First over the bridge to the beach.

Caden found a small fossillised shell so both the boys set about finding unusual rocks. We found loads of igneous rock. Miles got really into it and left the beach with heavy pockets full of shells and stones.

We found an arty garden/park and museum called LAAC which was sadly closed. So we walked around the lovely gardens instead. It was great!

This sculpture was made of anchors and bits of marine engines all welded together.

This was a sound sculpture, when the wind blows we think it makes noises.

Not sure about these rocks... beautiful though.

Getting excited about the museum, we headed off. There are commemorative plaques and references to WWII all around.

The effect of this monument was nice with the light against the edges. We read the info. which told us that the memorial to those that died was in an hour glass to suggest that time could also be turned around.

Outside the museum was a humongous gun! Maybe pulled by war horses...? some of the artillery used in WWII  had also been used in  WWI. We had the permission of the museum to take photographs within the museum.

It was really interesting to learn about the German economic crisis preceding WWII. One bank note says Funf millionen Mark. 5 million Deutsche Marks!! Economic crisis indeed! Also coins with swastikas on... the boys learned the word swastika today.
Both the boys excitedly called to show me the models.. they were very cool models and also a mine casing... extra cool!

When you think about men going up against heavy artillery like this...

We all really enjoyed the museum. I would recommend it for adults and interested kids alike. There is a great selection of artefacts and memorabilia to enjoy. The stories and photos really draw you in and it's a great addition to learning about WWII history and the History of France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and England at that time. Also the descriptions are in three languages.. French, English and Nederlands so we have been speaking much more French again today. Caden bought a magazine, in French about wartime airplanes.. he is really interested in them and wants to make airfix type models now. Hopefully we can do this soon.

Here is Miles arranging all his shells and stones nicely beside his bed before he went to sleep tonight.

UK - Indoor Skydiving and War Horse

The boys thought it would be fun to try out indoor skydiving. Miles was particularly interested. Caden was not sure. We checked out some professional skydivers practising in the wind tunnel and voted to go for it. The kids got their sky diving suits, goggles and helmets on and we did the briefing.

Miles is demonstrating the sign for 'Relax' in sky diving language.

The boys wait to be called in. It went well, Miles was a bit scared but relaxed and went for it. Caden opted out, which was fine.

We had noodles and Japanese food at Wagamama's and then at home Miles did Meccano.. he enjoyed making a car with a motor.

We are learning about WWI and WWII at the moment amongst other things and Caden listened to War Horse this week by Michael Morpugo. We then went to the theatre in Milton Keynes to see the performance which was excellent. Afterwards, we did an interview for a local radio Heart of Herts, to review the show. It was interesting to see the recording equipment. This is us at the theatre before the show.

We went to Camp Mohawk with their old home eduating friends on Friday. This is a massive ship playground, they played all sorts, with all ages. It's much better learning to play with children of all ages than just one age group.

We went for dinner at our friend's house, this is the kids making their own chicken wraps.

We visited our other friends.. they were all so excited to spend time together.

and then home on the very choppy ferry to Calais.

Family in Yorkshire

Miles made a crane out of yellow lego!

Caden worked on his Pokemon sticker book.

Auntie Fiona and I took the boys out for a delicious healthy meal!

Tickle monster...

Miles was excellent at getting the ball in the net in basketball and loved his new threads... Holly and Caden play pokemon cards.

Nomads

The boys have played games with some of their friends.

We went for dinner in a beautiful restaurant in Calais when the hotel we stayed at messed up on our dinner plans and sent us to a much nicer place.. the boys were soooo happy!

Caden said he is going to produce gammon steak like this when his pigs are ready... Caden ate the lettuce, I ate the tomato and Miles ate the cucumber...

Miles chose a burger.. I asked him 'Miles, how does your burger taste?' He said 'Burger!!!' Hahaha
He ate so much food he declared himself... as full as a dragon!

The ferry crossing was great, a beautiful clear day. We could see Dover clearly from the port in Calais.. we have the travelling bug again. Excited about travelling around Europe soon. Caden did some colouring in of Pokemon.

Daddy and the boys have lots of gaming to catch up on together and I have a nice cup and cafetiere with some good quality coffee... everyone's happy.

Morocco 2023

Morocco was Miles' 13th birthday present. We were excited as it was our first trip to Africa.  We found an amazing restaurant for Mile...
