Maths stuff

Caden has been practising taking photos and videos with my phone. Here is a Caden selfie...

A photo of me and Miles (a nice one of Miles I thought)

Miles is carrying on with his reading eggs program. He is enjoying it and while the letters are coming slowly, he enjoys the games and I know from teaching Caden that these things go in but take a while to show so I am trusting him. He loves to see what is behind the eggs. It will be easier for him when he improves his mouse pad control so he can catch moving objects on some of the games.

Miles borrowed my reading glasses and drank his milk!

Here he is doing a floor puzzle.

Caden decided to decorate the hall floor with glitter. It looked rather pretty but he had to vacuum up the mess he made!

Caden needed a box, he got the tinsel and some little plastic cups and made wheels with them and a chassis with lolly sticks. He used sticky tape as his adhesive and wrote the number 55 for the car's number. (by himself) This was a 'flying car' for his pet snake.

The lolly stick chassis and you can just see the 'cup wheels'.

Miles wanted me to take a photo of him with his sponge stampers. He was pretending they were his vehicle.

We went to the Down's Barn playground. It is super-amazing! With an enormous slide, a really cool wooden structure that goes up the side of two hills (rather awesome for adult children - I love climbing on it haha)

Here is Miles mid-slide and Caden making his way up. We were lucky to get the sun that afternoon and we came with other home educating friends.

Here are the four boys. Leticia and I realised they were swinging in order of age.

Alex, Miles, Arthur and Caden

This week Miles started his little maths program. Miles started right at the beginning with the number 1. He has already surprised me by really getting to grips with the mouse pad quickly and by really getting the hang of the methods of the puzzles and what he is supposed to do very quickly. He knows many numbers but his knowledge is inconsistent so we are going to go through the lot. He has flown through all 24 lessons for numbers 1 and 2. I guess it will be the same for all 0-9 numbers. I love the format and so does Miles. It is interesting and the games are exciting and relevant for his age. I always sit with Caden and Miles for all of their learning and assist them where they need it. They are making great progress between them.

We went for a nice 10 mile round trip cycle ride to Giffard Park play area this week too. It was great fun for the boys who love to read their books in the trailer. We met some other friends at the park and they played for a good hour.

Caden is making excellent progress with his maths work at the moment. We are coming back to fractions when the rest of the Year 1 stuff is complete but he has flown through this week's work. He is honestly doing some of the patterns quicker than me, it's shocking when he does that, slightly worrying (for me and my old brain!) though I guess we all hope our children will eclipse us academically - we hope this won't happen at the age of 6. :)   The topic we crunched this week was patterns which was counting forwards and backwards in 2s and 5s, finding the odd one out of a pattern of numbers, pattern shapes and colours, and recognising odd and even numbers. I feel it is going really well for him. I have renewed Caden's maths subscription for conquer maths as well. (Under the same circumstances as Miles' math subscription).
Tomorrow we start learning the 'money' section from algebra.  Then onto measurements, geometry and probability for the rest of the year.

I came across some very interesting case studies of home educated children today.

Many of them have got into top Russell Group universities and have done this in a variety of ways. It really helps with my confidence to home educate to see how other children do so very well after this experience. Caden and Miles are so happy in their lives and have so much time to play and be with their friends as well as learn formally. It is so good to see them both relaxed and happy.

Morocco 2023

Morocco was Miles' 13th birthday present. We were excited as it was our first trip to Africa.  We found an amazing restaurant for Mile...
