Matchbox Swap

We volunteered to participate in this month's matchbox swap. This is a scheme which is set up and run by a home educating mother and various families who volunteer to join in. There is a theme each month set by the organiser and families are paired up with each other for loosely corresponding ages. The idea is that you have to create something interesting for the other family that will fit into a matchbox. Post it to them and wait for yours to arrive in the post.

We have been very busy over the last few weeks so we are late starting the project but we have managed to finish it this morning.

We we going to go with tiddlywinks and had bought some buttons to do this with but when we tried to use it as a tiddlywinks game it just didn't work so we decided on hopscotch.

We used the cover of the matchbox to draw a pattern which could be used to draw the design on the ground for this we used a ruler and made each box 1cm square which was good contextual use of mathematical tools.
We included a chalk for the hopscotch design to be drawn with at the other end. Caden knew that the person receiving it was a girl so he wanted to include a pink chalk (!) and we put stars with number on each of the 4 buttons so they were the markers for up to 4 people to join in. Caden wrote the numbers.

Then I wrote out the instructions (because Caden's writing is still too big to fit the whole thing into a matchbox)  while Caden coloured in the matchbox cover.

It all fitted Yay! We are both very happy with the result.

We are posting it today and looking forward to ours arriving in the post in return.
