Spider Webs and Graffiti Art

We are really getting into our home ed stride again now. The kid's Dad brought round the rest of the home ed. resources I had left back at the old house and we have had loads of fun doing things with them.  Yesterday they got creative outside with our giant chalks. They drew suns and spaceships, stars and wiggles. They did learn about boundaries between our neighbour's houses and ours eventually after we had to wash away some art on the next door neighbour's path. Caden was very proud of his happy sunshine.

Miles had a happy little boogie in amongst the artwork!

Let's hope it rains soon ;)

Their friend Emma came to play and help them create art and they got in their spaceship!

Then we went indoors and Miles and Emma made glittery, flowery artwork at the table...

...while Caden got creative with a spool of string. He wound it around the ironing board, chairs and door handles to make a spider's web. What was very cool was that he tied the yellow and blue bell visible in the photo to a line of string attached to the web so that when someone knocked the string they would alert him by ringing the bell. He thought of this by himself too. You can just see the string in the photos.

We have made such excellent progress with Maths so far this year as planned. Caden completed Reception Maths in a month (I knew from previous testing he was way ahead of this level but wanted to recap as we have had such a tough few months since we moved home). He consistently gets 90% or higher. We have moved up to Year 1 Maths now and it's again very easy for him (I am pleased to say, I am one of those home educators who likes to tick the academic boxes alongside giving them lots of varied experiences and time to pursue their own interests through free play). We have just completed the section on Whole Numbers on Conquer Maths which has covered ordinal numbers, ascending and descending numbers 10s and 1s place value incorporating subtraction and addition with 10 x multiplications, also circumstantial maths like "If Mark is 2nd place out of 10 people in a race, how many are in front of him". The latter are questions we will talk over when we are out and about at places like the park, ie how many cars are behind ours if we are fourth in the queue. It is easy to bring maths into every day life.

It's so fantastic living in MK! We have so many home educating families around us. People always pop in with their children and the kids get so much more playing with their friends now than before. We have so much more time because we aren't driving everywhere too. It's easy to home educate them cheaply because we don't feel the need to access classes as much as before, there are so many free resources. This morning Alison came by with her children Millie and Emma. I had already been out with the boys cycling since 8.30 - we went out for an early walk in the chilly morning sun to our friend Kirsten's house for a play and workout (me and Kirsten alternate quick weight training sessions in her garage sometimes while the kids play with duplo, each-other and have books read to them). Then we walked back and had our visitors. The kids played out on their bikes and scooters for an hour. After their play time we had a home-made lasagna for lunch that I had made while they were playing out (so yummy with fresh basil I found in the reduced isle yesterday). Then we did a long Maths session. Miles is feeling poorly today so he played with his toys happily on the floor while I sat with Caden.

We have choc chip muffins to make later on and we are just off out to Woodcraft Folk again. Looking forward to this, Caden is working towards a badge. 6 sessions I think to go.

I have a lecture tonight, it's a shame that Miles is ill. If it wasn't such a serious lecture I wouldn't go. It's my practical assignment though and I need all the help I can get. Miles is eating lots of blueberries and drinking water today. Had lots of cuddles too. He did wet his pants again but he says he is very happy to be at home and not in preschool anymore.

Feel like I am on fire with all the entries into the blog. Fellow bloggers, I see why you post more frequently, it does make life a lot easier to blog as you go and not have to remember all the stuff you do in a week.

Morocco 2023

Morocco was Miles' 13th birthday present. We were excited as it was our first trip to Africa.  We found an amazing restaurant for Mile...
