Bucks County Museum

There was a free day at Zoomania in Aylesbury last week so we went along with a group of other home educating families to have a play and follow it up with a visit to the Bucks County Museum.

Here are a few snaps of them enjoying the play frame.

There are a lot of things happening this Summer at the Roald Dahl museum in Aylesbury. Though I REALLY want to take them to the big one at Great Missenden. Especially since they have been listening to 'The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me', over and over in the car lately and of course we recently finished reading the BFG together.

The Bucks county museum has a great temporary exhibition by an artist who is interested in birds and their skeletons. It was great. Really interesting. Caden liked this a lot.

Toucan skeleton sketch. How cool is that, with the beak on that tiny neck! There must be some serious muscleage on that there neck!

More taxidermy.

There is a section in the museum on the history of Buckinghamshire County. This was a display about how Roman coins were made with some examples of some that have been excavated.

Of course most of the displays that we look at together are accompanied by conversations about what we are looking at. I try to answer all his questions or we look at the accompanying booklets or information provided to talk over the exhibits.

He lifted out each piece of different wood and tested for weight and feel.

Fossils found in Bucks. We learned that Aylesbury was once underneath a pre-historic sea and there have been a lot of marine fossils excavated there. Caden was really taken with this idea.

They both enjoyed playing with the giant train.

There was a small exhibit on jewellery. This was a very interesting piece of jewellery, through the nose and ear. We talked about tribes that wear jewellery and they tried on some basic pieces and looked at themselves in the mirror.

Designing the garden of this house.

There was a new temporary exhibition on C20 toys (makes me feel old, I remembered playing with some of them) and some toys dated back to the Victorian era. They just wanted to play with the trains though.
