Cookery lesson!

Today the boys saw what an eye test was like. I had to visit the opticians so we had the opportunity to talk about the machinery the optician was using to test my eyes with. Caden correctly guessed that one was a microscope and there were other machines that blew puffs of air into my eye that tested for eyeball pressure. Caden tried to look into my eye through my pupil ( he learned this word today too ) but couldn't see anything, this was why they used a strong pen-light to see inside my eye. A useful exercise in learning the way that visits like that work and also the anatomy of the eye. We also went to the charity shop because Caden wanted a book about South America. We found one that looked interesting but there were no good pictures in it. There was an excellent book on Africa but he was only interested in South America. We will have to pay a visit to the library soon.

Then we went to Woodcraft folk. Caden was excited to know what would happen with the promised Lego Movie session planned by his best friend there Caspar.

I took Miles to visit one of his friends while Caden was there, he played soldiers and trains and had a great time!

When we got back, Caden had been assigned the part of this lego character that had a dragon back and tail. Apparently the planning took place today, the movie will be shot at the next session.

Miles had a little play on the dragon.

The boys both ran off with their swords and Miles found a big watering can.

On the way home we talked about what we would like to eat for dinner. Caden asked for tomato pasta and wanted some meat, I had steak in the fridge so we decided to all share it. Miles also wanted to cook so I asked what pudding he wanted to make, he said apple crumble. So it was decided.

I arranged their ingredients and the things they would need to make their dishes. Miles is pouring the flour into his bowl and Caden, his pasta into a pan of cold water.

Here Miles has already put in butter, sugar and oats and is crumbling it up. I had already chopped up the apples and he arranged them in the heart shaped dish.

I had chopped up Caden's sun dried tomatoes and red pepper and opened his can of sweetcorn. He had a smell of the basil and liked it so sprinkled lots of it over the passata he had put directly in the baking dish. He added the rest of the ingredients and then stirred them together with his spoon. Then I brought over the par-boiled pasta and I poured that in. Then we both had to cover every piece of pasta with his amazing tomato and basil sauce.

Then Caden sprinkled on the cheese. He did a great job of making it all very even so every area was covered well.

I put both their dishes in the oven and they played while I made a bit of custard. They were excited about the food being ready and asked lots of times if it was done yet.

Then, finally, the pasta was made.... we tasted it, it was excellent!!

Miles was very happy with his crumble.

This was our dinner today, courtesy of Caden and Miles...

The pudding was a hit too!
